SPACE SYNTAX METHOD IN THE EVALUATION OF URBAN DESIGN COMPETITION PROJECTS

Aim: The main aim of the study is to reveal that the analytical and objective data presented by the space syntax method contribute positively to the jury evaluation process of urban design competitions. Method: The awarded projects in a finalized project competition were evaluated using the analytical tools of the "space syntax method", and the results were compared with the project reports, the results of the competition and the jury reports. In this context, the study was carried out on Gebze Historical City Center Urban Design Project Competition concluded in 2005. The problems expressed in the competition specifications, the required program and the statements of the jury report published after the competition were interpreted together with the analytical values obtained by the space syntax method and the positive and negative aspects of the method were discussed. Using the method of space syntax, the data obtained - axiality, convexity, integration, connectivity, and intelligibility- were analyzed. Results: The syntactic data of the three awarded projects with the current situation of the project area were determined by space syntax analysis. Conclusion: It is predicted that the space syntax method will be included in the jury evaluation process and will contribute positively to the competition projects from an analytical and objective perspective.

Amaç: Çalışmanın amacı, mekân dizimi yönteminin sunduğu analitik ve objektif bulguların, kentsel tasarım yarışmalarının jüri değerlendirme sürecine sunabileceği katkıları ortaya koymaktır. Yöntem: Çalışmada, 2005 yılında yapılan Gebze Tarihi Kent Merkezi Kentsel Tasarım Proje Yarışması’nda ödül alan ilk üç yarışma projesi ve proje alanının mevcut durumu "mekân dizimi yöntemi"nin analitik araçları kullanılarak incelenmiştir. Alan çalışması sonuçları, yarışma şartnamesinde belirtilen alan sorunları, ihtiyaç programları ve yarışma süreci sonunda yayınlanan jüri raporlarıyla bir arada değerlendirilerek; mekan dizimi yönteminin proje değerlendirme sürecinde kullanılmasının olumlu ve olumsuz yönleri tartışılmıştır. Projelerin mekân dizimi yöntemiyle analiz edilmesi, projelere ilişkin aksiyelite, konveksite, entegrasyon, bağlantılılık ve kavranabilirlik değerleri gibi kentsel tasarım ilkelerine dair objektif bulguların üretilmesine imkân tanımıştır. Bu değerler temelinde tasarım projelerinde mekâna yönelik sistemin ne kadar çalıştığı, ihtiyaç programlarına cevap verip vermediği incelenmiş, jüri sonuç raporları ile karşılaştırmalar yapılmıştır. Bulgular: Mekân dizimi yöntemi ile proje alanının mevcut durumu ile üç yarışma projesinin sentaktik verileri ortaya konmuştur. Sonuç: Çalışma sonucunda; elde edilen tüm sentaktik değerler, karşılaştırılarak değerlendirildiğinde mekân dizimi yönteminin jüri değerlendirme sürecine dahil edilmesi ile yarışma projelerinin analitik ve objektif perspektiften ele alınması adına olumlu katkılar sağlayacağı öngörülmektedir.
