THE EFFECT OF MIGRATION ON THE ARTISTIC CREATION PROCESS: SHİRİN NESHAT

Since early ages, art and social developments have been in close relationship with each other. Therefore, we cannot separately think the history of art and history of society from each other. In this sense, the developments and wars in the history of humankind have influenced art deeply. Furthermore, migration among the processes that affect the history of art is substantial. The artistic works of artists, who have voluntarily or obligatorily migrated, have been affected positively or negatively from the political, economical, social and cultural results of the migration process. This study addresses one of the artists, Shirin Neshat, who has migrated. By considering the assumption that "information regarding the life of the artist is required to have a better understanding of his/her works", it has been observed that there are some changes in the artistic creation process of Iranian artist Shirin Neshat after migrating to the USA. In this article, the effect of migration on the artistic creation process and the relationship of Shirin Neshat as a migrating artist with the migration concept have been analyzed in a descriptive manner as a result of the examination of the related visuals and texts.

Sanat ile toplumsal gelişmeler ilk çağlardan beri birbirleriyle yakından ilişkilidir. Dolayısıyla sanatın tarihi ile toplumların tarihi birbirinden bağımsız düşünülemez. Bu bağlamda insanlık tarihindeki gelişmeler ve savaşlar sanatı derinden etkilemiştir. Bunun yanı sıra sanat tarihini etkileyen süreçler arasında göç olgusunun da etkisi büyüktür. İsteğe bağlı ya da mecburi olarak göç eden sanatçıların çalışmaları göç sürecinin siyasi, ekonomik, sosyal ve kültürel sonuçlarından dolayı olumlu veya olumsuz anlamda etkilenmiştir. Bu çalışmada göç eden sanatçılardan Shirin Neshat ele alınmıştır. “Sanatçının yaşamına dair bilgiler eserlerin daha iyi anlaşılabilmesi için gereklidir” varsayımından yola çıkarak İran kökenli sanatçı Shirin Neshat’ın Amerika’ya göç etmesinin ardından sanatsal üretim sürecinde bazı değişiklikler olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Bu makalede göçün sanatsal yaratım sürecine etkisi ve göç eden bir sanatçı olarak Shirin Neshat’ın göç kavramı ile ilişkisi gerekli görsellerin ve metinlerin incelenmesi sonucunda betimsel bir yöntemle analiz edilmiştir.
